Second Casefile: Casting Lines [Action/Written]

I'd been keeping myself busy for the past week or so, starting when Molly arrived, and had thus far found very little success with anything. There were no thresholds to work with, there were no ley lines to tap into, there were no places rich with magical energy to utilize, and I'd be damned if I was going to try and open a gate to the Nevernever again.

I did not need that bitch of a migraine to come back.

So, along with my apprentice, I began scouting around the village looking for any significant mystical resources. She was also interested in the Filial spirits, but frankly, they sound too much like the Fey for my taste, and I've had quite enough of that, thanks.

Today, however, I was doing something more personally significant. I was going to make myself a new staff, because clearly the old one wasn't showing up any time soon. Unfortunately, this process takes freaking forever, and I had no idea where to start.

So I figured I'd phone a friend.

Hey. Any and all spellcasters, magic-workers, witches, wizards, and anybody else who knows how to work with magic and spellcraft, I was hoping to get some input on the local situation.

Are there any local magic sources, aside from the Filial spirits, that can be tapped into or accessed? Are any of the local flora and fauna significant at all, mystically? Have there been any difficulties you've had using certain kinds of magic? Anything considerably easier?

In essence- What's the deal, anyway?

[Well, Leonhardt figures if Harry is wanting to filter, he may as well make it a better one and make it private.]

The Filial spirits are all that exists. If you have magic of your own, that can be used to augment what you have along with new things you may not have been able to use before.

None of the local flora or fauna appears to have mystical properties. Many are edible and some of the flora is useful for remedies, but there is nothing of a magical nature about that.

If you are seeking new forms of magic to draw upon, it may be better to seek out things among the residents. Some worlds have magic that is powered by items that it may be possible to obtain, though very difficult. One thing you may wish to consider is speaking with those in the smithy, there was a mention not too long ago about being able to augment weapons with magic.

My apologies for the length, that was quite a few questions you had there. [And of course he's completely ignoring the part about things more difficult or easier, because he's not been affected at all except by the power cap and inability to summon.]

Is there any sort of group here for wizards and magi of various ilk to discuss and practice their crafts and whatnot?

If any such group exists, they have been long disbanded or are running in secret if still existing. There are classes in the school open to all, but that is more for the Filial magic, not magic in general.

Perhaps forming such a group wouldn't be a bad idea, there may well be interest.

[ it's cool, homey. sharpe's not interested in reading and he barely wants to touch the codework involved with those filters. as it is, he simply assumes dresden is doing what molly had done -- testing them out.

so instead, he'll come across harry on the edge of the town. the rifleman still hasn't found his green jacket and has settled on a soft, worked-leather coat. the greatcoat left behind for worse weathers.

This bit had been sort of an interesting prospect, and one of my weirder ideas- a circle of circles. More accurately, a selection of landmarks, describing a pentagram within a circle, each marked with a pentagram within a circle in a small, subtle, and unobtrusive location. If this place didn't come with any natural magical flow, I was gonna create some of my own and oh crap that was Richard.

I jerked around at the sound and my knife slipped, slicing my finger as I did so. Not long, but apparently pretty deep, and oh, yeah, it was bleeding. Well, hey, waste not, want not. I quickly dabbed some blood into the circle behind my back, imbuing it with a bit of energy and muttering under my breath, then stuck the finger into my mouth as he came closer.

"Lo Wisharg"

Oh, well done, Harry. I pulled the finger out of my mouth and tried again.

"Hello, Richard."

The soldier had his sword and his palm was heavy on the pommel. The blade itself -- though deep in its scabbard -- looked like it might be a wicked thing. Thick and straight. Fit for a very tall man.

"Out walking?" Mild, mild curiousity.

... Wait. That almost sounded like...

"Care to share with the new guy?"

"Dunno -- it might cost you, mate. What've you got that I'd want, hmm?" He would share, but not freely, apparently.

I am a Charter mage and I've been having some mixed results with my magic, mainly because there are no Charter stones here. However I've been able to use Free magic, most likely because it doesn't follow the same laws and orders that Charter magic does.

Aside from that, magic ability seems to differ from person to person depending on how their magic works in their home worlds.

I actually had an idea of the mages in Luceti getting together and working on projects and, y'know, having discussions about the efficacy of their magic in this place. Maybe make up for each other's handicaps a bit.

There aren't aside from the filial spirits. But...but magic can be taught over worlds. At least...I found that my own magic can be taught. I had a good friend who actually learned how to use my spells. [ A pause. ]

Summoning here is quite difficult and impossible for the most part. Unless you've been given access to do it in the past... [ he stops writing because he rather not discuss that over the journals. ]

It also affects the person's world apparently whenever they do summon anything.

In my experience, summoning is tricky, messy business best avoided. Usually the one being summoned is more dangerous than helpful anyway.

As far as learning your spells, I've actually been discussing a sort of magically-oriented get-together of some sort. A sort of magical support network here in Luceti. Consider yourself invited.

Yes. You're right about that. It's very tricky and dangerous if done wrong as well. [ Helios has first hand experience and all. ] Oh really? That sounds delightful! You know with all the magical oriented people here I'm surprised there isn't one already.

[ There's a light chuckle on his end. ] I'll glad join. It sounds like something Luceti could use. Perhaps pooling our magic together when can find ones that can combine and go together. Maybe make it easier during...drafts and what not.

More than welcome, sure. Hell, anybody who has something worth sharing, I'm all ears. I'm not some kind of magic-snob.

...And here I thought Luceti was free of pesky little things like graffiti artists.

The Filial Spirits appear to be the extent of the magic inherent to Luceti. Those capable of magic in their own world generally bring their sources with them, whether that is from items with magical properties or their own selves. Concerning the local flora and fauna, I am unaware of any magical properties they possess, aside from the ability of the animals to talk.

I have personally noticed no difficulties or improvements in my ability to use magic, aside from limits imposed on all who come to Luceti. Others may have experiences that differ.

The door to the kitchen is propped opened, and Molly glanced up when the door to the floor opened, clearly keeping an eye out for someone - and then there he was! She waves to him, considerate enough to not shout down the hall, and then points to her coffee. The distance might be a bit much to see her facial expression, but her eyebrows are up in inquiry.]
